Buy.com (dba Rakuten.com Shopping)The Brontes Went to Woolworths View/Buy 4.49'How I loathe that kind of novel which is about a lot of sisters'; so proclaims Deirdre at the beginning of The Bront?s Went to Woolworths, one of three sisters. London, 1931. As growing up looms large in the lives of the Carne sisters, Deirdre, Katrine and young Sheil still share an insatiable appetite for the fantastic. Eldest sister Deirdre is a journalist, Katrine a fledgling actress and young Sheil is still with her governess; together they live a life unchecked by their mother in their bohemian town house. Irrepressibly imaginative, the sisters cannot resist making up stories as they have done since childhood; from their talking nursery toys, Ironface the Doll and Dion Saffyn the pierrot, to their fulsomely-imagined friendship with real high-court Judge Toddington who, since Mrs Carne did jury duty, they affectionately called Toddy. However, when Deirdre meets Toddy's real-life wife at a charity bazaar, the sisters are forced to confront the subject of their imaginings. Will the sisters cast off the fantasies of childhood forever? Will Toddy and his wife, Lady Mildred, accept these charmingly eccentric girls? And when fancy and reality collide, who can tell whether Ironface can really talk, whether Judge Toddington truly wears lavender silk pyjamas or whether the Bront?s did indeed go to Woolworths? The Bront?s Went to Woolworths is part of The Bloomsbury Group, a new library of books from the early twentieth-century chosen by readers for readers.
Rakuten Kobo U.SCalculating Compassion View/Buy 100.00The history of relief work is in its infancy. Calculating compassion draws on new archival research to reveal the priorities of nineteenth-century relief workers, and the legacies of their preoccupations for relief work today. Tracing the early history of familiar British aid agencies such as the British Red Cross Society (founded 1870) and the Save the Children Fund UK (founded 1919) - as well as those less familiar and now defunct - this book challenges any notion of a common 'humanitarian' ideal. Instead, it questions the current tendency to advocate a return to the clarity of founding principles by examining relief agencies' complex, and at times contentious, origins. Here are revealed the domestic anxieties which stimulated the organisation of relief for suffering strangers as well as the role of aid in the projection of British interests abroad. Following intrepid individuals as they dispensed blankets and Bovril, first aid and pyjamas in the Franco-Prussian and Russo-Turkish wars of the 1870s, as well as British wars of empire in the Sudan and South Africa, Calculating compassion considers relief workers' enduring practices and habits-of-mind, and some of the unintended consequences of their efforts. Rather than simply responding to news of distant suffering, those delivering aid were instrumental in the stimulation of public concern - and here relief workers contributed to a politics of humanity which had lasting influence on the history of domestic and foreign politics in Britain. New bonds of solidarity were proclaimed but not all, it seemed, were equal in the brotherhood of humanity, whether at home or abroad. This book is intended for students, academics and relief professionals interested in placing relief work into its political and social context.

Rakuten Kobo U.Smy son, my son View/Buy 12.68What do you do when your wife abducts your children? This was the question facing Douglas Galbraith when, in 2003, he returned home to Scotland from a few days' work in London. The house was silent, empty and locked; his four and six-year-old sons' pyjamas lay on the bedroom floor. And on the doormat, confirmation from the Post Office of a forwarding address - in Japan. He has not seen them since. This book goes to the very heart of relations between parents and children, men and women, and between races and nations - to the heart of what it is to be alive.

Rakuten Kobo U.STales of The Mother Load View/Buy 2.99Ever cry while folding old baby clothes into a give-away box? Summon your last ounce of grace while being bitten and kicked and scratched by a three-year-old? Admitted a new respect for your mom and the things you put her through? Welcome to the wild world of motherhood, defined by author Lori-Anne Poirier as "the most blessed, hilarious, frustrating, daunting and rewarding of adventures." After a decade of interviewing rock stars, television personalities, politicians and criminal investigators as a freelance journalist, Lori-Anne switched gears after having kids, to write about the smaller moments in her own life. From trying to keep snap-up pyjamas on a child who has just discovered how to unsnap things, to discovering beauty in a beat-up tabletop, Lori-Anne shares some of her most cherished anecdotes and prized epiphanies as a mom. She also relates how her eyes were re-opened to a lot of living that had been discarded on her journey through adulthood: Simple pleasures, such as puddle jumping or the wisdom of Winnie-the-Pooh. Looking at the world as her son and daughter must see it has brought back some of the excitement and adventure that she and - she argues - the majority of adults have lost to the pressures of work, bills and expectations to "act your age." It's a book about laughter, forgiveness, sacrifice, living deliberately and just getting through the day. It's life, it's love. It's Tales of The Mother Load.

Rakuten Kobo U.SKahani View/Buy 8.99Pakistan's finest women writers - Jamila Hashmi, Mumtaz Shirin, and Fahmida Riaz, amongst others - introduce us to the compelling cadences of a rich literary culture. A naive peasant is left with a white man's baby; a frustrated housewife slashes her husband's silk pyjamas; a middle-class woman sees visions of salvation in the tricks of circus animals … Equally at ease with polemic and lyricism, these writers mirror the events of their convoluted history - nationalism and independence, wars with India, the creation of Bangladesh, the ethnic conflicts in Karachi - in innovative and courageous forms. Influenced both by the Indian and Islamic traditions of their milieu and by the shocking impact of modernity, they are distinguished above all by their artistic integrity and intellectual honesty. Rakuten Kobo U.SConfessions of a Fairy's Daughter View/Buy 18.99A moving memoir about growing up with a gay father in the 1980s, and a tribute to the power of truth, humour, acceptance and familial love. Alison Wearing led a largely carefree childhood until she learned, at the age of 12, that her family was a little more complex than she had realized. Sure her father had always been unusual compared to the other dads in the neighbourhood: he loved to bake croissants, wear silk pyjamas around the house, and skip down the street singing songs from Gilbert and Sullivan operettas. But when he came out of the closet in the 1970s, when homosexuality was still a cardinal taboo, it was a shock to everyone in the quiet community of Peterborough, Ontario-especially to his wife and three children. Alison's father was a professor of political science and amateur choral conductor, her mother was an accomplished pianist and marathon runner, and together they had fed the family a steady diet of arts, adventures, mishaps, normal frustrations and inexhaustible laughter. Yet despite these agreeable circumstances, Joe's internal life was haunted by conflicting desires. As he began to explore and understand the truth about himself, he became determined to find a way to live both as a gay man and also a devoted father, something almost unheard of at the time. Through extraordinary excerpts from his own letters and journals from the years of his coming out, we read of Joe's private struggle to make sense and beauty of his life, to take inspiration from an evolving society and become part of the vanguard of the gay revolution in Canada. Confessions of a Fairy's Daughter is also the story of "coming out" as the daughter of a gay father. Already wrestling with an adolescent's search for identity when her father came out of the closet, Alison promptly "went in," concealing his sexual orientation from her friends and spinning extravagant stories about all of the "great straight things" they did together. Over time, Alison came to see that life with her fa

Rakuten Kobo U.SHMS Ganges Days View/Buy 9.49When Peter Broadbent entered HMS Ganges, the toughest training establishment for young recruits to the Royal Navy, he was a naive 15-year-old Yorkshire schoolboy, entranced with the idea of seeing the world, proud of his drainpipe trousers and DA hairstyle, and eager to meet girls. In other words, he was a 'Nozzer' - a raw and unsuspecting recruit. When he emerged 386 days later it was as a prospective 'Dabtoe', not quite a fully trained Seaman, but well on the way. This funny and vivid memoir accurately captures what it was like to climb the mast, have your kit trashed, learn to swear, develop a taste for Kye and Stickies, double around the parade-ground at dead of night in your pyjamas, endlessly run up and down Laundry Hill. and to do it all and much more while being continually barracked by a demanding Petty Officer Instructor. Along the way, Peter relished learning the Navy lingo and how to sail. He consumed platefuls of Cheese Ush, won a boxing certificate, discovered a secret stash of Playboy magazines, smoked thousands of cigarettes, and convinced girls back home that his shorn hair was in fact the very latest fashion 'down south'.

Rakuten Kobo U.SThe Amazing Argentine: A New Land of Enterprise View/Buy 2.99THE INVADERS It was on a boat which was laden with bananas and running from Colon, on the Isthmus of Panama, to New York. The steward called me at dawn. He thought I was mad because I stood in pyjamas without apparent heed of the mirky drizzle. Beyond the sad waters there was little to see but a low-lying and dreary island with a melancholy lighthouse. No vegetation brightened the scene. There was no gorgeous sunrise. There was nothing but a lump of barrenness heaving out of the sea. But this was the island of San Salvador, the western land which Columbus first touched when he sailed to find the Indies. There are now near one hundred and fifty millions of people of European descent in the Americas. And a little glow came into my imagination that rain-swept morning when I felt I was the only traveller on the boat who had crawled forth to gaze at San Salvador. I tried to picture what thoughts must have crowded the mind of Columbus when he sighted this shore. He never knew what he had discovered for Spain. He could never have dreamt he was the first in the greatest invasion the world has ever witnessed. A year later I was on an Atlantic liner. The fo'c'sle was thronged with poor Spaniards from Vigo and poor Portuguese from Lisbon. In the voyage across the Atlantic I had watched them in the steerage-tawny-visaged, easygoing men, and broad-set, figureless women, sprawling, gossiping, drowsing. To the accompaniment of an accordion they lifted their voices in song on the balmy, starlit evenings whilst the ship churned through the tropical seas

Rakuten Kobo U.SThe Brontes Went to Woolworths View/Buy 11.99'How I loathe that kind of novel which is about a lot of sisters'; so proclaims Deirdre at the beginning of The Brontës Went to Woolworths, one of three sisters. And when fancy and reality collide, who can tell whether Ironface can really talk, whether Judge Toddington truly wears lavender silk pyjamas or whether the Brontës did indeed go to Woolworths? The Brontës Went to Woolworths is part of The Bloomsbury Group, a new library of books from the early twentieth-century chosen by readers for readers.

Rakuten Kobo U.SMaudie: Revelations of Life in London and an Unforeseen Denouement View/Buy 3.99THE MANSION OF MAUDIE An awakening in a whore's bedroom is, as a rule, cheerless. One is vague as to one's whereabouts, as a rule sore on the John Thomas, and a general feeling of having made a bloody fool of oneself is most often mixed with a wonder whose pyjamas you've got on and whether you've got the clap or possibly worse. Charles Vernon St Just Osmond, fifth off the succession to the earldom of Osmond, very much a 'younger son', with a good deal less money even than most younger sons, turned over twice, flicked his eyes at the sunlight dribbling through the blinds, bit a tongue which felt like leather, sniffed a distinct aroma of whisky, and wondered where the hell he was, why he had done it and whom he had done it on. He raised himself on one elbow, and looked. Then he was pleased. He had obviously not made a very drunken error. The good lady who lay by his side, in a charming silk pyjama suit with a deep Venetian lace collar, was not only pretty, but interesting. Her chestnut hair flowed over her shoulders. Her arms, bare from just above the elbows, were deliciously rounded, and her very delicate little hands were heavily be-ringed. This, Osmond (or, as we shall call him Charlie) concluded, was no ordinary tart, and the question of finance smote him suddenly. He had a vague recollection of friends and the Empire and the Continental, and he knew that he couldn't have much on him. He was just slipping out of bed to look through his pockets when she woke up and put a soft arm round his neck
Rakuten Kobo U.SThe Story of Peter Pan: Retold From the Fairy Play by Sir James Barrie View/Buy 3.99EARLY DAYS In one of the nicest nurseries in the world there were beds for three young people called John Napoleon, and Wendy Moira Angela, and Michael, the children of Mr. and Mrs. Darling. The nursery was wide and airy, with a large window, and a bright fire with a high fire-guard round it, and a big clock, and prettily-coloured nursery-rhyme pictures over the walls. It was in many ways a most interesting household. For one thing, although there was a pretty little parlour-maid called Liza, the children were bathed and dressed by a big dog called Nana, whose kennel was kept in the nursery. On the evening on which our story begins, Nana was dozing peacefully by the fireside, with her head between her paws. Mr. and Mrs. Darling were getting ready to go out to dinner and Nana was to be left in sole charge of the children. Presently the clock went off with a whirr, and struck-one, two, three, four, five, six-time to begin to put the children to bed. Nana got up, and stretched herself, and carefully switched on the electric light. You would have been surprised to see how cleverly she managed to do that with her mouth. Then she turned the bedclothes neatly down and hung the little pyjamas over the fire-guard. She then trotted up to the bathroom and turned on the water; after feeling it with her paw to make sure that it was not too hot, she went off to look for Michael, who, being the youngest of the three children, must go to bed first. She returned immediately with him sitting astride on her back as though she were a pony. Michael, of course, did not want to be bathed, but Nana was firm and, taking him to the bathroom, shut the door so that he should not be in a draught. Then Mrs. Darling came to peep at him as he splashed about in the nice warm water. Whilst Mrs. Darling was in the nursery she heard a wee noise outside the window, as a tiny figure, no bigger than a little boy, tried the window-latch, and vanished suddenly at her cry of surprise. She flung the window o

Rakuten Kobo U.SMaking Vintage 1920s Clothes for Women View/Buy 27.99The 'roaring twenties' were exciting years for women's fashion. The iconic image is of the young 'flapper' dancing the night away in a sparkling dress with fringes and tassels moving to the beat of the Jazz age. But, for all women in the post-war years of the 1920s, there was a new freedom in fashion as hemlines lifted and waistlines dropped. The simplified silhouette caused a boom in home dressmaking as women with basic sewing skills used tissue paper patterns to run up a new frock in the latest style. This practical book explains the background to these years and the trends in women's fashion, before introducing a range of garments that women would typically have worn. Suzanne Rowland gives a unique and detailed account of how to make vintage 1920s clothes for women based on the dress collections at the Royal Pavilion & Museums, Brighton & Hove, and Worthing Museum and Art Gallery. Fifteen detailed projects for garments and accessories include a pair of fashionably daring beach pyjamas, the wedding dress of a bride from East Sussex, and a simple striped frock suitable for wearing at a British seaside resort. Each project includes a detailed description of the original garment with an accompanying illustration alongside photographs of the original pieces. Scaled patterns are included with a list of materials and equipment required. Step-by-step instructions and close-up photographs are given for each stage of the making process with information about the original techniques used. Superbly illustrated with 314 close-up colour photographs.

Rakuten Kobo U.SBullet-proof Pyjamas View/Buy 3.99A theater play, this is best described as a romantic comedy dealing with different kinds of sexual preference. Four women are in love with the same Russian millionaire, Igor, but he is in love with Carlos, the young gay Spanish private eye he has employed to spy on his young wife whom he suspects of infidelity. Igor maintains a conventional front and feels his wife is compromising his reputation. But behind this outward appearance of respectability, Igor, a tormented man, indulges darker passions. The four women in love with him are Jackie, his wife; her sister Isobel (his ex-fiancee); his secretary Marguerite whose passion for Igor has remained unrequited for five long years; and Igor's confidante, Helga, a Swedish S & M specialist who has, perforce, become a psychotherapist for many of her confused male clientele. The four men involved are two as above Igor and Carlos, plus Jackie's lover Victor, an adman, whose frivolous disposition justifies the label Madman; a gay man, Joe, who runs a military disposal store and who helps Jackie and Victor find the bullet-proof pyjamas of the title; and Horace, hen-pecked husband of Marguerite whom Helga guides towards rebellion. The contrasting and conflicting motivations of these eight people drive them towards a chaotic confrontation out of which a semblance of order emerges. The intention of the play is to amuse by exploring absurdities in the human condition, The emphasis is on dialogue and situation. There is optional, incidental nudity as the play opens, and, in the last scene, a discretely staged sexual encounter that is interrupted by unexpected arrivals. The author claims, as influences, George Bernard Shaw, Oscar Wilde and Restoration dramatists such as Richard Sheridan.

Just like that: Thud Thud. Sort of felt it and heard it. Then I smelled firecrackers, or that's what I thought of. Firecrackers. Gunpowder. But it didn't occur to me that it could be a gun. Not at first. BUTCH: Next thing I heard Dad shouting. I can't remember what he said, but I woke up and pulled on my shorts. My grandmother was screaming. It was a wailing sort of noise. And when I came downstairs, I stood in the doorway and saw Mum. Dad was leaning over her, and when the ambulance men came he stood up and his pyjamas were covered in blood. ANDREW: I rang the ambulance. I ran around the house, because I had a sense of someone in the house. Downstairs. MAY CARMICHAEL: My daughter was on the bed. She was dead. Andrew was on the phone to the ambulance. I told him 'It's too late', but I don't think he heard me. I don't think he even realised I was there. Later. I asked the policeman how long he was going to leave Megan on the bed like that and he told me I'd have to bear with him for a while longer.
